Frequently asked questions
Your questions answered
E10 Bio Unleaded
Yes. There’s no problem mixing Ampol E10 Unleaded with Ampol’s regular or Amplify premium unleaded fuel.
Many new vehicles require 95 RON premium unleaded petrol as a result of the manufacturers’ push to lower vehicle emissions by increasing engine compression ratios.
The octane level of Ampol E10 Unleaded petrol is 94 RON which although higher than regular Unleaded, is still not at the level required to prevent pre-ignition in vehicles designed for premium fuels.
Ampol E10 Unleaded is suitable for use in most new and many older cars, utes, vans, and motorcycles as indicated in the owner’s manual. However, ethanol has different solvent properties to petrol and the use of E10 Unleaded petrol may dissolve built-up residues in fuel systems in older vehicles, leading to fuel filter blocking.
Many vehicles will include a label on the inside of the fuel filler door indicating that fuels with up to 10% ethanol are suitable.
Ampol E10 Unleaded is a blend up to 10% ethanol and 90% regular unleaded petrol. To create Ampol E10 Unleaded petrol, the ethanol is mixed into the regular unleaded as the fuel tanker is being loaded at the fuel terminal. The quantity of ethanol introduced into the unleaded petrol stream is carefully controlled to ensure the final blend meets the requirements of the relevant Australian Fuel Quality standards.
E10 Unleaded is a mixture of Ethanol and regular 91 Octane unleaded petrol. Ethanol is a natural product made from crops such as sugar cane, sorghum or wheat. Ampol E10 Unleaded contains 10% ethanol and 90% unleaded petrol, which complies with the limit set under the Australian government’s national fuel standards.
E10 Unleaded can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Ethanol is a biofuel made from non-fossil fuel sources, such as plant or animal products. Biofuels burn cleaner and are renewable. This means they’re better for the environment than traditional fossil fuels.
The legislation supporting the introduction of ethanol blended fuels was introduced in 2003 and was adopted nationally in 2005. In 2007, the NSW Government mandated that a minimum percentage of all petrol sold by selected major fuel distributors must be ethanol blends. In 2017, the QLD Government also introduced a biofuels mandate that set out minimum percentage of ethanol fuel blends.
Apart from the environmental benefits associated with using Ampol E10 Unleaded, Ampol-sourced ethanol is largely made from Australian-grown sugar, sorghum and wheat crops. Filling up with Ampol E10 Unleaded helps support employment and local businesses in regional Australia.
